Development of Blue Bamboo Shelter Painting
This painting took several months to realise. After making the pictures in the Victoriahuset in Stockholm in July 2024 I first made some composition drawings in ink once I got home. Because I was also still working on my Night Garden series I started painting the base layers end of 2024 and putting on the initial compositions in white. In January 2025 I had to get cracking, because I would be showing these paintings at an exhibition in early March. Due to that deadline I ended up with ‘okay-ish’ paintings composition wise but colour wise they were nowhere near ready in my opinion (while I already had changed the colour schemes three times up until then).
So after the exhibition I took them out of their frames and started to work on them again, this time also using oil pastels in order to not only add more/other colours but also depth and texture. Blue Bamboo Shelter was the one I edited the most. Harsh yellows were replaced by blush orange and bright red altered with dark red purples. I added dark purple browns around the pond, teal blues on top of the already blue bamboo leaves and a silver grey background brought all pieces together as one. Finally, my initial ‘jungle dreams’ that I had been dreaming for almost a year became a reality, including this Blue Bamboo dream of a painting.
I can’t be happier with the end result. The painting has a very secure and safe energy about it while also giving you the space for your own interpretation. The bamboo leaves offer shelter but also leave room for growth and experimenting. So where ‘Mama Musa’ feels like the mother of this series, this Blue Bamboo is definitely the father. Lovingly guarded encouragement and opportunities await within its shelter.
