“Botaniska” is een serie olieverfschilderijen, -schetsen en collages geïnspireerd op de botanische tuinen in Göteborg en Stockholm die ik bezocht in de zomer van 2024. Ik dacht dat ik niet gemaakt was voor 24 uur licht, maar wat bleek? Het noordelijk licht is veel blauwer en diffuser dan hier in Nederland en dat maakt het voor mij veel beter verteerbaar. Dat principe heb ik vertaald naar een kleurpalet waarin ik zo min mogelijk geel heb gemengd.
“Botaniska” is a series of oil paintings, sketches, and collages inspired by the botanical gardens in Gothenburg and Stockholm, which I visited in the summer of 2024. I thought I wasn’t cut out for 24 hours of light, but guess what? The northern light is much bluer and more diffuse than back home in the Netherlands, which makes it much more palatable for me. I translated that principle into a colour palette in which I mixed as little yellow as possible.
Schetsen | Sketches
Puur, energiek en vol flair. De schetsen die ik maakte ter voorbereiding van de schilderijen op canvas bevinden zich op de grens van de botanische wereld en een andere, buitenaardse wereld vol bijzondere vormen en tinten.
Na een periode van werken op groot formaat waren de schetsen een manier om weer vertrouwd te raken met kleinere oppervlakken. Om losser en speelser met olieverf om te gaan, met grote kwasten en met veel verf te werken. Mijn enige restricties waren het palet (enkel blauw, rood en wit) en het kleine oppervlak (15x20cm).

Pure, energetic, and full of flair. The sketches I made in preparation for the canvas paintings are on a crossroads between the botanical world and another, otherworldly world full of unique shapes and hues.
After a period of working on large formats, the sketches were a way to reacquaint myself with smaller surfaces. To work more freely and playfully with oil paint, with large brushes and with a lot of paint. My only restrictions were the palette (only blue, red, and white) and the small surface area (15x20cm).

De collages zijn grotere werken (42x60cm) waarin veel te zien en te genieten valt. Opgebouwd uit meerdere lagen in verschillende kleuren paars stralen ze een gevoel van overvloed en weldaad uit. Paars spreekt tot je intuïtie, een innerlijk weten. Samen met de vormen en de titels die verwijzen naar thema’s binnen de muziek, geven deze collages een ruimte een lichtvoetige maar doorleefde levensvreugde. Als je de muziek hoort kan het leven elke dag een feest zijn.
