This painting is part of my “Inside the Glasshouse”-series. It is inspired by my visit of the Victorian Glasshouse at Glasgow Botanic Gardens in the autumn of 2023. So many parts of the glasshouses caught my eye: the ferns, the cacti, the succulents, the larger than life Glauca Pendula, but also the almost erratic collection of begonia, geranium, and pelargonium where this painting found it’s origin.
Dit schilderij maakt deel uit van mijn serie “Inside the Glasshouse”. Het is geïnspireerd op mijn bezoek aan de Victoriaanse kas in de botanische tuinen van Glasgow in het najaar van 2023. Zoveel onderdelen van de kassen trokken mijn aandacht: de varens, de cactussen, de vetplanten, de grootste Glauca Pendula die ik ooit zag, maar ook de bijna grillige collectie begonia’s, geraniums en pelargoniums waar specifiek dit schilderij op is geinspireerd.

Ontstaan In de Schaduw van de Treurceder
Mijn “Inside the Glasshouse”-serie is geinspireerd op de kassen in de botanische tuin van Glasgow. De eerste keer dat ik die bezocht was in de lente van 2018 en veel van mijn aandacht ging toen uit naar de bloeiende rhododendrons in de glooiende borders. In de herfst van 2023 bezocht ik de tuin opnieuw op een koude en regenachtige dag. Uren heb ik door de kassen gedwaald, tot het me duizelde: de bladvormen, nerfkleuren, gedetailleerde patronen in stengels, naalden, bloemblaadjes en natuurlijk de levensgrote treurceders. Genoeg inspiratie voor een nieuwe serie schilderijen, waar dit schilderij er een van is.
Hier groeit een verzameling kleine schaduwminnende planten, beschermd tegen alle extreme weersomstandigheden door een grote Glauca Pendula. De schaduwplanten voelen zich veilig genoeg om al hun kleuren en vormen te tonen onder de grote blauwe boom.

Background In Glauca Pendula’s Shadow
My “Inside the Glasshouse” series is inspired by the glasshouses in Glasgow’s Botanic Gardens. I first visited the Glasgow Botanic Gardens in the spring of 2018, and much of my attention was focused on the flowering rhododendrons in the rolling borders. In the autumn of 2023, I revisited the garden on a cold and rainy day. I wandered through the glasshouses for hours, until the leaf shapes, vein colours, detailed patterns in the stems, needles, petals and larger than life Glauca Pendulas left me in a daze. Plenty of inspiration for a new series of paintings, including this “In Glauca Pendula’s Shadow”.
Protected from all harsh weather conditions by a large Glauca Pendula grows a cosy collection of small shade-loving plants. It’s safe for them to show all their colours guarded by the large blue tree.
