Avond vol oplichtende Anemonen is een van de schilderijen waarmee ik mijn moeders botanische erfenis heb vastgelegd en de troost die de tuin me bood in de zomer na haar overlijden. De schijnbaar onverschillige wetmatigheid van de planten die net als alle zomers ervoor in bloei kwamen, bood me houvast. Iets om op terug te vallen terwijl er iets anders in elkaar stortte.
Avond vol oplichtende Anemonen geeft bijna licht in het donker, zo groot is het contrast tussen de door het maanlicht beschenen witte bloemblaadjes en de donkerblauw met rode kornoelje haag erachter. Alsof de bloemen ons eraan willen herinneren dat hoe donkerder de nacht, hoe feller de sterren.
Misschien ben jij zelf het licht in het donker of heb jij het talent om lichtpuntjes te zien waar anderen enkel kommer en kwel ervaren. Dan heb ik dit schilderij voor jou gemaakt.
Evening Full of Luminous Anemones is one of the paintings I made to capture my mother’s botanical legacy and the comfort the garden offered me the summer after her passing. The seemingly indifferent determination of the plants, blooming just like every summer before, offered me something to hold on to. Something to fall back on while something else collapsed.
Evening Full of Luminous Anemones almost glows in the dark, such is the contrast between the moonlit white petals and the dark blue and red dogwood hedge behind them. As if the flowers want to remind us that the darker the night, the brighter the stars.
Perhaps you yourself are the light in the dark, or perhaps you have the talent to see silver linings where others experience only doom and gloom. If so, I created this painting for you.

Ontstaan Avond vol oplichtende Anemonen
Dit schilderij is onderdeel van mijn Nachttuin serie, geïnspireerd op de tuin van mijn moeder. Na haar overlijden in de lente van 2024 lukte het een hele tijd niet om met kleur te werken. Tegelijkertijd wilde ik graag haar tuin vastleggen, haar levende erfenis. Dus werkte ik met inkt en houtskool en maakte tekeningen en collages.
Tegen het einde van de zomer liep ik tijdens de schemering door haar tuin en viel het me op hoe het avondlicht de kleuren dempte. Felpaars werd aubergine, magenta werd oudroze en alle tinten groen kregen een blauwe schaduw. Deze kleuren kon mijn hart wel aan, met een aantal olieverfschilderijen als resultaat.
En een daarvan is Avond vol oplichtende Anemonen. De fel oplichtende anemonenplant vol bloemen en knoppen in het maanlicht tegen een donkerblauw en rode kornoeljehaag. Hoe donkerder de nacht, hoe feller de maan en de sterren. Nu beschikbaar in mijn shop.
Background Evening Full of Luminous Anemones
This painting is part of my Night Garden series, inspired by my mother’s garden. After her passing in the spring of 2024, I wasn’t able to work with colour for a long time. At the same time, I wanted to capture her garden, her living legacy. So I worked with ink and charcoal, making drawings and collages.
Towards the end of summer, I walked through her garden at dusk and noticed how the evening light muted the colours. Bright purple became aubergine, magenta became dusky pink, and all shades of green took on a blue cast. These were the kind of colours my heart could work with, resulting in several oil paintings.
One of them is Evening Full of Luminous Anemones. The brightly illuminated anemone plant, bursting with flowers and buds in the moonlight, stands against a dark blue and red dogwood hedge. The darker the night, the brighter the moon and stars. Now available in my shop.
