Hosta mineur is een portret vol kleurcontrast. Het lichtgeel knalt van het doek dankzij de verschillende tinten paars die het omringen. Het grasgroen en goudbruin voegen nog meer diepte toe aan de kleurexplosie.
Heel af en toe schilder ik iets en voel ik: dit was ik niet. Dit moest geschilderd worden en ik was toevallig in de buurt. Hosta mineur is zo’n portret. Het heeft me lang geduurd om er vrede mee te sluiten, want het dreef me zo nu en dan tot waanzin. Maar nu het een paar maanden in de hoek van het atelier heeft gestaan is de rust weergekeerd.
Als je kijkt naar de route die ik heb afgelegd binnen de Botaniska serie, dan is dit het toppunt, of de eindbestemming zo je wilt. Niet alleen kunnen paars en geel weer naast elkaar bestaan, ook de kleur groen doet weer zijn intrede.
Misschien is dat ook de reden dat het laatste Botaniska schilderij – Hosta majeur dat begin september online komt – ook niet meer voelt als een Botaniska schilderij. De eindbestemming was al bereikt en ik kon experimenteren met nieuwe paden.

Hosta mineur is a portrait full of colour contrast. The light yellow pops off the canvas thanks to the various shades of purple surrounding it. The grass green and golden brown add even more depth to the colour explosion.
Every now and then I paint something and feel: this wasn’t me. This had to be painted, and I happened to be nearby. Hosta mineur is such a portrait. It took me a long time to come to terms with it, because it drove me crazy at times. But now that it’s been in the corner of the studio for a few months, there’s a truce. I can look it in the eye and stay calm.
If you look at the path I’ve taken within the Botaniska series, this is the pinnacle, or the final destination, if you will. Not only purple and yellow can coexist, but green is also making a comeback.
Perhaps that’s also why the last Botaniska painting—Hosta majeur, which will come online in September—no longer feels like a Botaniska painting. The final destination had already been reached and I could experiment with new paths.
