Muskaatsalie op Muziek is onderdeel van mijn Botaniska serie waarin ik het Zweedse zomerlicht en de bijzondere plantvormen van de botanische tuinen van Goteborg en Stockholm heb vastgelegd. Mijn Botaniska project bestaat uit schetsen, schilderijen op doek en canvasboard en deze collages. Ondanks dat ik de zomer van 2024 begon met de schilderijen op canvasboard, waren de collages het eerste onderdeel van het Botaniska project dat ik afrondde in de lente van 2025.
Clary Sage set to Music is part of my Botaniska series, in which I captured the Swedish summer light and the unique plant forms of the botanical gardens of Gothenburg and Stockholm. My Botaniska project consists of sketches, paintings on canvas and canvas board, and these collages. Although I began the paintings on canvas board in the summer of 2024, the collages were the first part of the Botaniska project that I completed in the spring of 2025.

Ontstaan Muskaatsalie op Muziek
“Botaniska” is een serie olieverfschilderijen, -schetsen en collages geïnspireerd op de botanische tuinen in Göteborg en Stockholm die ik bezocht in de zomer van 2024. Ik dacht dat ik niet gemaakt was voor 24 uur licht, maar wat bleek? Het noordelijk licht is veel blauwer en diffuser dan hier in Nederland en dat maakt het voor mij veel beter verteerbaar. Dat principe heb ik vertaald naar een kleurpalet waarin ik zo min mogelijk geel heb gemengd.
Tijdens het tekenen en schilderen van muskaatsalie viel het me op hoezeer de vormen op een muziekstuk begonnen te lijken. Alsof een compleet ritmisch notenschrift voor mijn ogen ontstond. En toen ik beter keek vormden ook de andere collages combinaties van muzikale thema’s. Notenbalken, muzieksleutels, toonladders en akkoorden, alles was aanwezig voor een harmonieus geheel. Een serie muziekstukken in artistiek purper. Toepasselijker kon niet, want net als muziek staat de kleur paars voor het niet-tastbare innerlijke. Deze Muskaatsalie op Muziek is het eerste akkoord in een sonnet van collages, geinspireerd op de zomer van 2024 waarin ik na de dood van mijn moeder intuitief mijn psyche opnieuw inrichtte. Het verlies een plek gaf en mijzelf voorbereide op een toekomst waar naiviteit en onschuld plaatsmaakten voor initiatie en levenservaring.

“Botaniska” is a series of oil paintings, sketches, and collages inspired by the botanical gardens in Gothenburg and Stockholm, which I visited in the summer of 2024. I thought I wasn’t cut out for 24 hours of light, but guess what? The northern light is much bluer and more diffuse than here in the Netherlands, making it much more palatable for me. I translated this principle into a color palette in which I mixed as little yellow as possible.
While drawing and painting the clary sage, I was struck by how much the shapes began to resemble a piece of music. As if a complete rhythmic notation was forming before my eyes. And as I looked more closely, the other collages also formed combinations of musical themes. Staves, clefs, scales, and chords—everything was present for a harmonious whole. A series of musical pieces in artistic purple. It couldn’t be more fitting, because, like music, the colour purple represents the intangible inner self. This Clary Sage set to Music is the first chord in a sonnet of collages, inspired by the summer of 2024, when I intuitively restructured my psyche after my mother’s death. Giving the loss a place within while preparing myself for a future where naivety and innocence gave way to initiation and life experience.
