This painting is part of my “Inside the Glasshouse”-series. It is inspired by my visit of the Victorian Glasshouse at Glasgow Botanic Gardens in the autumn of 2023. So many parts of the glasshouses caught my eye: the ferns, the cacti, the succulents, the larger than life Glauca Pendula, but also the almost erratic collection of begonia, geranium, and pelargonium where this painting found it’s origin.
Dit schilderij maakt deel uit van mijn serie “Inside the Glasshouse”. Het is geïnspireerd op mijn bezoek aan de Victoriaanse kas in de botanische tuinen van Glasgow in het najaar van 2023. Zoveel onderdelen van de kassen trokken mijn aandacht: de varens, de cactussen, de vetplanten, de grootste Glauca Pendula die ik ooit zag, maar ook de bijna grillige collectie begonia’s, geraniums en pelargoniums waar specifiek dit schilderij op is geinspireerd.

Ontstaan Neon Pelargonium
In de kassen van Glasgow bevindt zich een afdeling vol met de meest verbazingwekkend gekleurde begonia’s. De kleuren zijn zo fel, verzadigd, helder en contrastrijk dat ze bijna onnatuurlijk aanvoelen. Die buitenaardse kwaliteit heb ik vastgelegd in dit schilderij. De bladeren stralen een neonachtig licht uit, dat sterk contrasteert met de donkere achtergrond.
Ook qua textuur en energie is dit een schilderij met hoog contrast. De snelle, spontane energie en beweeglijke textuur in het lichtgele blad van de Pelargonium contrasteert met de matte ondoordringbare textuur van de oliepastel in de achtergrond.

Background Neon Pelargonium
Within the Glasgow glasshouses there is a section filled with the most amazingly coloured begonias. So bright and so contrasting that in a way they almost feel unnatural. That otherworldly quality is captured within this painting. The leafs are oozing a neon-like light which is in high contrast with the dark background.
This is also a high-contrast painting in terms of texture and energy. The quick, spontaneous energy and fluorescent texture of the Pelargonium’s pale yellow leaves contrast with the matte, impenetrable texture of the oil pastel in the background.
