Deze serie tekeningen, collages en schilderijen is geïnspireerd op de tuin van mijn moeder. Na haar overlijden in de lente van 2024 lukte het een hele tijd niet om met kleur te werken. Tegelijkertijd wilde ik graag haar tuin vastleggen, haar levende erfenis. Dus werkte ik met inkt en houtskool en maakte tekeningen en collages.
This series of drawings, collages, and paintings is inspired by my mother’s garden. After her passing away in the spring of 2024, I wasn’t able to work with colour for quite some time. At the same time, I wanted to capture her garden, her living legacy. So I worked with ink and charcoal, creating drawings and collages.

Tegen het einde van de zomer liep ik tijdens de schemering door mijn moeders tuin en viel het me op hoe het avondlicht de kleuren dempte. Felpaars werd aubergine, magenta werd oudroze en alle tinten groen kregen een blauwe schaduw. Deze kleuren kon mijn hart wel aan, met een aantal kleine olieverfschilderijen als resultaat.

Towards the end of summer, I walked through my mum’s garden at dusk and noticed how the evening light muted the colours. Bright purple became aubergine, magenta became dusky pink, and all shades of green took on a blue cast. These were shades my heart could hold, resulting in several small oil paintings.

Donkerrode Duizendknoop |
Dark Red Knotweed
Het maanlicht gaf de donkerroze pluimen een donkerrode gloed, alsof ook de bloemen rekenschap gaven van een bloedend hart, maar zich daar niet door lieten tegenhouden. Bloei door alles heen, is wat de duizendknoop mij leerde.
The moonlight gave the dark pink plumes a dark red glow, as if the flowers, too, were aware of a bleeding heart but refused to let it stop them. To keep growing and blooming no matter what happens, that’s what the knotweed taught me.

Luminous Anemones
De anemonen geven bijna licht in het donker, zo groot is het contrast tussen de door het maanlicht beschenen witte bloemblaadjes en de donkerblauw met rode kornoelje haag erachter. Alsof de bloemen ons eraan willen herinneren dat hoe donkerder de nacht, hoe feller de sterren.
Evening Full of Luminous Anemones almost glows in the dark, such is the contrast between the moonlit white petals and the dark blue and red dogwood hedge behind them. As if the flowers want to remind us that the darker the night, the brighter the stars.
Schildpadbloem | Beardtongue
Felroze bloemen piepen door donkergele stengels die een diepe buiging maken. Donkerrood blad groeit recht omhoog. Een belofte van nieuwe energie na een groot verlies.
Bright pink flowers peek through dark yellow stems that take a deep bow. And at the same time, dark red leaves that grow upward. As a promise of renewed energy after a great loss.

Witte Kornoelje onder Warme Nachthemel is als een heldere hemel vol vallende sterren die blijven vallen totdat je geen wensen meer overhebt en alleen nog maar kunt dansen onder een show van kosmisch vuurwerk.
White Dogwood Under a Warm Night Sky is like a clear sky full of shooting stars that keep falling until you have no more wishes left and the only thing left to do is dancing under a display of cosmic fireworks.

Aubergine Anemonen in het Avondlicht herbergt de zwoele atmosfeer van warme zomeravonden wanneer de lucht zwaar is van nectar en gedorst hooi. Avonden waarin het soms lijkt alsof de tijd stilstaat en de schemer eindeloos duurt.
Aubergine Anemones in the Evening Light captures the sultry atmosphere of warm summer evenings when the air is heavy with nectar and threshed hay. Evenings when time sometimes seems to stand still and the twilight stretches on forever.

Na het schilderen van deze vijf schilderijen vroeg de hele serie om een soort meesterstuk. Dat werd het schilderij Nachttuinttroost waarin ik alles verwerkte dat de tuin me het afgelopen jaar geleerd heeft.
After painting these five paintings and making myself familiar with the shapes and pallete, the entire series demanded a masterpiece. That became the painting “Night Garden Comfort,” in which I incorporated everything the garden has taught me over the past year.

What I have depicted in this painting is the depth and great beauty of the complex emotional state of the psyche after a part of it has died along with the person you loved.

My “pattern blocks” are smoothly finished blocks of sustainable bamboo, measuring 10 x 10 x 4 cm, with a colourful patterned tile on one side based on one of my paintings.
