Strongylodon caeruleus
Strongylodon macrobotrys, a turquoise-flowering vine from the Philippines, serves as the model for about 14 portraits/close-ups within the Rare Flowers series. The colour, the three-dimensional flowering form with a berry-like center surrounded by tooth-shaped leaves—I couldn’t get enough of it. Strongylodon caeruleus is one of the most stately of all those variations.

Background Strongylodon caeruleus
I planted the seeds for my Rare Flowers series in the Australian greenhouse at the Stockholm Botanic Garden in 2024. There, I saw the most bizarre botanical forms. Almost two years later, the time was finally ripe to start drawing and painting them. And the desire was even greater than it was back in 2024.
Strange forms with which I could experiment freely. Compiling a whole new palette. And discovering what associations would arise while creating more abstract portraits. Strongylodon caeruleus is one of those portraits.
