those are the perks of being numb
you don’t hear the pounding drum
you don’t see red flags waving steady
numb ones never have to be ready
you don’t feel the endless loss
of another boundary crossed
you don’t taste bitter defeat
soothingly lulling yourself to sleep
I did not even smell the mire
when my house was caught on fire
outside maybe someone weeping
with melting flesh I was still sleeping
but then my lungs got black and burned
and my breath did not return
slowly then my heart did stop
that’s when I finally woke up
