Lelies en ik zijn helaas geen goede match. De meeldraden hebben in het verleden meerdere kledingstukken verpest, waardoor ik ze sindsdien mijdt als de pest. Maar toen ik deze bloemen zag herkende ik ze niet als lelies en vond ik ze harstikke leuk. Na het schilderen ontdekte ik dat het lelies waren, maar toen was het portret al klaar en besloot ik dat deze wel mochten blijven 🙂
Lilies and I are not a good match, unfortunately. Their stamens have ruined several garments in the past, that’s why I avoid them as much as I can. But when I saw these flowers, I didn’t recognize them as lilies and I absolutely loved them. Which resulted in this portrait after which I discovered they were actually lilies. But I decided they could stay 🙂

Achtergrond | Background
Lelie is onderdeel van mijn Botaniska serie waarin ik het Zweedse zomerlicht en de bijzondere plantvormen van de botanische tuinen van Goteborg en Stockholm heb vastgelegd.
De olieverfschetsen waar Lelie bijhoort waren mijn voorbereiding voor de schilderijen op canvas board. Na een periode van werken op groot formaat waren de schetsen een manier om weer vertrouwd te raken met kleinere oppervlakken. En om losser en speelser met olieverf om te gaan met grote kwasten en veel verf met als enige restricties het palet (enkel blauw, rood en wit) en het kleine oppervlak (15x20cm).
Lily is part of my Botaniska series, in which I captured the Swedish summer light and the unique plant forms of the botanical gardens of Gothenburg and Stockholm.
The oil sketches to which Lily belongs were my preparation for the paintings on canvas board. After a period of working in large formats, the sketches were a way to reacquaint myself with smaller surfaces. They also allowed me to work more freely and playfully with oil paint, using large brushes and lots of paint, with the only restrictions being the palette (only blue, red, and white) and the small surface area (15x20cm).
