“Botaniska” is een serie plantportretten waarin ik het Zweedse zomerlicht en de bijzondere plantvormen van de botanische tuinen van Goteborg en Stockholm heb vastgelegd.
Het blauwe, diffuse, noordelijke zomerlicht heb ik vertaald naar een palet met zo min mogelijk geel.
Botaniska bestaat uit collages, olieverfschetsen en olieverfschilderijen waarin je duidelijk een paletverschuiving ziet van diep donkerpaars naar (zij het heel licht) geel.
Botaniska Collages
Tijdens het tekenen en schilderen van muskaatsalie viel het me op hoezeer de vormen op een muziekstuk begonnen te lijken. Alsof een compleet ritmisch notenschrift voor mijn ogen ontstond. En toen ik beter keek vormden ook de andere collages combinaties van muzikale thema’s. Notenbalken, muzieksleutels, toonladders en akkoorden, alles was aanwezig voor een harmonieus geheel. Een serie muziekstukken in artistiek purper. Toepasselijker kon niet, want net als muziek staat de kleur paars voor het niet-tastbare innerlijke.
Mijn collage “Muskaatsalie op Muziek” bleek het eerste akkoord in een sonnet van collages, geïnspireerd op de zomer van 2024 waarin ik na de dood van mijn moeder intuïtief mijn psyche opnieuw inrichtte. Het verlies een plek gaf en mijzelf voorbereide op een toekomst waar naïviteit en onschuld plaatsmaakten voor initiatie en levenservaring.

De Botaniska collages zijn werken van 42 x 60 cm waarin veel te zien en te genieten valt. Opgebouwd uit meerdere lagen in verschillende kleuren paars stralen ze een gevoel van overvloed en weldaad uit. Paars spreekt tot je intuïtie, een innerlijk weten. Samen met de vormen en de titels die verwijzen naar thema’s binnen de muziek, geven deze collages een ruimte een lichtvoetige maar doorleefde levensvreugde. Als je de muziek hoort kan het leven elke dag een feest zijn.
Plantportretten op papier
De olieverfschetsen die op de collages volgden, waren mijn voorbereiding voor de schilderijen op canvas board. Na een periode van werken op groot formaat waren de schetsen een manier om weer vertrouwd te raken met kleinere oppervlakken.
En om losser en speelser met olieverf om te gaan met grote kwasten en veel verf met als enige restricties het palet (enkel blauw, rood en wit) en het kleine oppervlak (15x20cm).

Puur, energiek en vol flair. De schetsen die ik maakte ter voorbereiding van de schilderijen op canvas bevinden zich op de grens van de botanische wereld en een andere, buitenaardse wereld vol bijzondere vormen en tinten.
Plantportretten op canvasboard
De portretten op canvasboard houden het midden tussen schets en detail. Het gezamenlijke resultaat is een collectie momentopnames van planten, tuinhoekjes en bloemen in noordelijk zomerlicht.
De meest abstracte varianten zijn de 16 plantportretten van 18 x 24 cm, waarin de kleur geel voor het eerst zijn intrede doet binnen de Botaniska serie, in een bloemhartje hier en daar en als mengkleur voor verschillende tinten groen en oker. Waar geel verschijnt wordt het nog stevig in toom gehouden door diep donkerblauw, donkerbruin of donkerrood.
In de 32 plantportretten van 24 x 30 cm die volgen op de eerste 16 voeg ik voorzichtig steeds meer geel toe. De serie van 32 begint met een palet van roze, paars en groen, maar krijgt langzaamaan steeds meer contrast. Zo doet relrood voor het eerst sinds 2020 weer zijn intrede op mijn palet. En zorgt het lichtgeel in de laatst afgeronde portretten van Petunia, Aquilegia en Aeonium voor een absoluut hoogtepunt in kleurcontrast binnen Botaniska tot dan toe.
Grote portretten op doek
Poederkwasten, hosta’s en vetplanten in het Botaniska-palet op doek. Groot, groter, grootst. Wordt vervolgd.
Mijn weg terug naar het licht
Wat in de zomer van 2024 begon als een kunstproject met enkel blauw, rood en paars, is in 18 maanden uitgegroeid tot een serie waarin de kleur geel de weg terug vond naar mijn palet. Over dit proces schreef ik een longread.
Botaniska
“Botaniska” is a series of plant portraits in which I have captured the Swedish summer light and the unique plant forms of the botanical gardens of Gothenburg and Stockholm.
I translated the blue, diffuse, northern summer light into a palette with as little yellow as possible.
Botaniska consists of collages, oil sketches, and oil paintings in which you clearly see a palette shift from deep dark purple to (albeit very light) yellow.
Botaniska collages
While drawing and painting clary sage, I noticed how much the forms began to resemble a piece of music. It was as if a complete rhythmic musical notation was emerging before my eyes. And when I looked closer, the other collages also formed combinations of musical themes. Staves, clefs, scales, and chords—everything was present for a harmonious whole. A series of musical pieces in artistic purple. It could not be more fitting, for just like music, the color purple represents the intangible inner self.
My collage “Clary Sage to Music” turned out to be the first chord in a sonnet of collages, inspired by the summer of 2024, during which, following the death of my mother, I intuitively reorganized my psyche. I gave the loss a place and prepared myself for a future where naivety and innocence gave way to initiation and life experience.

The Botaniska collages are works measuring 42 x 60 cm in which there is much to see and enjoy. Built up from multiple layers in various shades of purple, they radiate a sense of abundance and well-being. Purple speaks to your intuition, an inner knowing. Together with the shapes and titles that refer to themes within music, these collages give a space a lighthearted yet profound zest for life. When you hear the music, everyday life can be a celebration.
Plant portraits on paper
The oil sketches that followed the collages were my preparation for the paintings on canvas board. After a period of working on large formats, the sketches were a way to become familiar with smaller surfaces again.
And to handle oil paint in a looser and more playful way, using large brushes and plenty of paint, with the only restrictions being the palette (only blue, red, and white) and the small surface (15x20cm).

Pure, energetic, and full of flair. The sketches I made in preparation for the canvas paintings exist on the border between the botanical world and another, otherworldly realm full of unique shapes and hues.
Plant Portraits on Canvas Board
The portraits on canvas board strike a balance between sketch and detail. The collective result is a collection of snapshots of plants, garden corners, and flowers in northern summer light.
The most abstract variants are the 16 plant portraits measuring 18 x 24 cm, in which the colour yellow makes its debut within the Botaniska series, appearing in a flower heart here and there and as a blending colour for various shades of green and ochre. Where yellow appears, it is still firmly kept in check by deep dark blue, dark brown, or dark red.
In the 32 plant portraits measuring 24 x 30 cm that follow the first 16, I cautiously added more and more yellow. The series of 32 begins with a palette of pink, purple, and green, but gradually gains more contrast. For instance, riot red makes its re-entry into my palette for the first time since 2020. And the light yellow in the portraits of Petunia, Aquilegia, and Aeonium that I finished last of the series creates an absolute high point in colour contrast within Botaniska up to that point.

My Way Back to the Light
What began in the summer of 2024 as an art project featuring only blue, red, and purple has over 18 months grown into a series in which the colour yellow found its way back to my palette. I wrote a long read about this process.
