Lila Lianen | Follow the vines
Following the vines, that is my first and foremost urge whenever I step into such a lush and inviting place as the Victoriahuset in Stockholm. It is that exact invitation I wanted to capture within this painting. Whenever I look at it I feel like walking the green path deeper into the jungle.

Victoriaanse Jungle | Victorian Jungle
One of the most lush and safe spaces I ever encountered on my “visit as many botanic gardens in one lifetime as you can”-quest: the Victoriahuset at Stockholm Botanic Garden. A greenhouse that’s been there for centuries – which you feel immediately after entering: you’re just visiting, the pants are in charge here. They condone being taking care of by people just as cats condone cuddles. My definition of paradise.

Mama Musa
Banana plants have a special place in my heart. Like they always seem so top-heavy but don’t really seem to care. They just keep growing and producing these immense leaves that feel round and triangular at the same time and go in all directions. To me it feels like it could be a good life, living underneath those leaves (or those sheltering loving arms). Hence the title Mama Musa.

Het plan
Ik zou vijf schilderijen maken van 30 x 55 cm, net als bij de Nachttuin serie. Er was alleen een probleem: alle planten in de Victoriaanse kas waren felgroen. Contrast of bijzondere kleurencombinaties waren dus afwezig en een hele serie groene schilderijen leek me heel saai. Ik had dus een ander palet nodig en vanwege de tijdsdruk koos ik voor het palet van een serie collages uit 2020. Qua vormen en thema pasten die collages bij de Jungledromen die ik wilde vastleggen.
Maar al snel ontdekte ik dat het palet van vijf jaar geleden helemaal niet meer bij mijzelf paste. Mijn ogen deden zeer van al het geel. En dat terwijl het Zweedse licht nou juist zo prettig was zonder al dat geel. Hoe ik dit nou weer bij elkaar gecombineerd had, Joost mag het weten… Op de markt in Gouda heb ik ze getoond zoals ze in eerste instantie uit het atelier kwamen en in combinatie met de collages waarop het palet gebaseerd was:
Dromen die je wakker houden…
Maar na de markt (toen de druk er dus af was) heb ik ze opnieuw onderhanden genomen, omdat ik ontzettend agressief werd van al het geel. Het uiteindelijke resultaat is een serie van vijf jungledromen die ik wel wil blijven dromen: paarse lelies onder een grijze lucht, blauwe bamboe die waakt over een lila vijver, groene bananenbladeren in een roze kas. Met veel textuur en pigment dankzij het Sennelier krijt.
Deze serie heeft me veel kopzorgen bezorgd en me daardoor veel geleerd. De belangrijkste meta-les is dat mijn schilderijen alvorens ik ze kan schilderen, eerst dienen te ontstaan in mijn lijf. En dus niet alleen in mijn brein. Als ik vanuit mijn brein ga creëren, vanuit een idee of visie, dan loop ik tijdens het proces tegen allerlei hordes aan die ik normaal gesproken helemaal niet ervaar. En als ik al die hordes heb genomen en het tot een soort van respectabel einde heb weten te brengen, spiegelen de werken de wilskracht en agressie waarmee ik ze de wereld in heb geholpen. En dat is niet de energie die ik wil voelen als ik omringd ben met mijn eigen werk. Dus: patience, young Padawan!
